Court Remands Woman For Setting 9-year-old Housemaid Ablaze

A Yaba Chief Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in Lagos ruled that a
woman, Nkese Iroakazi, who allegedly murdered and set ablaze a
nine-year-old housemaid, Eno Bassey, had a case to answer. The Chief
Magistrate, Yewande Aje-Afunwa, gave the ruling at the resumed hearing
of the case following a report by the State Director of Public
Prosecutions (DPP).
She said that the DPP's report showed that a prima facie case had been
established against the accused.
The Prosecutor, Felix Ifijen, who arraigned the accused on August 29,
had told the court that Ms. Iroakasi set ablaze the housekeeper,
Bassey, on July 27 at her residence, No. 7 Adeniran Ogunsanya,
Surulere, Lagos.
According to him, Bassey, suffered severe burns and died a week later
at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
He noted that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law
of Lagos State, 2011.
The case was in August adjourned pending the DPP's report, while the
accused was remanded in prison.
