Anambra community, Ifite-Awka, overtaken by flood, refuse

Ifite-Awka, one of the streets of Awka, the Anambra state capital,
occupied mostly by students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, has been
abandoned by the state government, residents and our correspondent
say.
"The area is now filled with refuse and flood," our correspondent says.
He said before the university was brought to the area, the community,
surrounded by thick bushes, lacked basic infrastructure.
The community and its residents he says, had some reasons to cheer
when the university arrived.
However, despite the presence of a federal university in the area,
successive governments of the state are said to have abandoned the
community.
"It was only recently that the Ifite road was patched and the road is
already going back to its former bad state due to poor maintenance,"
our correspondent reports.
He added, "The residents of the area are appealing to the Anambra
stategovernment to do something urgently to stop the flooding and
dirty natureof the area. The residents mostly students, lamented that
it is unfriendly to study in a flooded and dirty environment."
